Career progression in retail and customer care at King Living

Within six months of joining the King Care team, Adam Cremona had been promoted from Consultant to Assistant Manager. He hadn’t actually been looking for a new job. He was happy working at a homewares business when a friend told him about a role that had come up in the King Care team. His interest was piqued and he switched industries for the chance to be part of a small team doing quite unique work.

“When I joined King Living, there were only three of us in the team,” he recalls. “Mandy, my manager, told me that she wanted someone who could learn everything there is to know about King Living and help her build the team. That’s the role I then stepped into. It’s rewarding to see the team grow with new team members and capability.”

King Care in action

As a premium product, all King Living furniture is recoverable. When customers want to update their furniture with new fabric, they come to the King Care team.

“We have to know the history of all the furniture we’ve ever sold in the business,” Adam explains. “But we also have to be very knowledgeable about fabrics and leathers and what would work for a customer and their home. Then there’s also an interior design element, as often customers will share pictures of their living room and ask for advice about what would best suit.”

Working with teams from across the King Living business, Adam says that he’s on a constant learning journey.

“Sometimes we have to deal with curveballs or work on a refurbishment of a model we haven’t seen before,” he says. “Then we have to liaise with different departments to create new patterns. You would also be surprised at how many people come to us because their dog has destroyed their furniture! In those cases we need to work out how to fix it and how we can replace the damaged parts.”

Despite the challenges that come their way, Adam acknowledges that the team draws on their collective problem solving skills to get great outcomes for customers.

A sense of pride

The King Living business is rooted in a sustainable mission to stop the impact of fast furniture ending up in landfill. And that’s something Adam takes great pride in, especially the role he plays in giving new life to classic King Living pieces.

“I recently helped a customer who wanted to recover the King Living sofa she purchased in 1993,” he reveals. “When we see the older furniture come in, you know it would have looked amazing back in its day. And when we send it back to the customers, it’s like they’re getting a brand new piece of furniture. But it’s not, it’s the same couch. There’s a huge amount of pride in that process and the quality of the furniture.”

As proud of the final result as he is, Adam enjoys getting to know the customers and going above and beyond to give them individualised attention.

“I come from a very customer centric background, where you have to build rapport with customers to get their trust,” he explains. “Sometimes there’s a lot of troubleshooting involved but because we have that trust, that’s how we always get the best outcome.”

Room to move

For now, Adam is settled in the King Care team. He’s enjoying the challenges of the work and deep diving into the King Living archives and business every day. But when the time comes to make the next move, Adam knows that there are endless opportunities at King Living.

“There’s so much room for movement within the company,” he says. “I’ve had a colleague move into the design team and one moved to the UK to help open the King Living Showroom there. When you find your niche and you’re really good at it, you’ll have access to so many opportunities.”

In his role Adam works across the business with every facet of the business, from design to manufacturing and customer service. From his insight into the business, he is positive about the way King Living nurtures talent.

“King Living has a culture that really values spotting talent and then providing opportunities for that talent to flourish,” he says. “That was how I found myself working here and how I’ve progressed in the business.”

With so many possibilities, Adam is excited about his future at King Living. If you’re looking for a new opportunity, discover how you can drive your career with King Living.
