Sustainability at King Living

Sustainability is at the heart of the King Difference. From the very beginning of King Living through to today, sustainability is considered in everything we do. Sustainability is reflected in the longevity of our products and the timelessness of our aesthetic. And that’s the way it will always be.

Learn more about what sustainability means to us at King Living and how we bring it to life across our furniture collections every day.

Like every King Living sofa, Zaza features a King Steel Frame.

Built on a sustainable foundation

David King founded King Living with a vision to reduce furniture waste. Appalled by the sight of broken furniture piled up on Sydney streets and headed for landfill, he was determined to create furniture that would last a lifetime.

In 1979, David King launched the King Steel Frame and Postureflex Seating System, inspired by luxury car suspension. David crafted furniture designed from the inside out to ensure quality, durability and comfort. The 25 Year Steel Frame Warranty is testament to that and the enduring legacy that David established.

In the five decades since, King Living has built on these strong foundations ensuring the brand stays true to the initial vision of a more sustainable future.

Modular design

The added benefit of the King Steel Frame is that it accommodates endless configurations with ease thanks to its robust and flexible foundation. Designed for flexibility, modular furniture can evolve with your changing lifestyle needs and adapt into different settings, staying with you for a lifetime.

The nature of modular design – independent pieces, or modules, that can be separated and reassembled – offers a range of benefits. Individual components can more easily be repaired, specific parts upgraded, or modules added over time as needed. A modular sofa can be adapted into countless settings, with the ability to turn one sofa into two or add and remove modules to change the seating capacity.

This flexibility and future-proofing means that fewer resources are used on new furniture and less waste ends up in landfill.

King-Care® aftercare

As part of our commitment to reducing fast furniture consumption, we offer refurbishment, repair and recovering services, facilitated by the dedicated in-house King-Care® team. Services include everything from repairing individual components inside your sofa to replacing covers with new fabric or leather and complete rebuilds from the steel frame foundation.

Tailored, removable covers are a key feature of King Living furniture. One advantage of this is that the covers are washable but it also supports the longevity of the furniture, significantly lowering the environmental impact in the long term. Select designs, like the 1977 Sofa also offer machine washable covers.

The modular nature of the designs makes repair and customisation straightforward, encouraging recycling and upcycling of parts, further reducing environmental footprint.

Vertical integration

As a vertically integrated company, we have full control over every aspect of the product life cycle, from design and packaging to delivery. To maintain the integrity of our supply chain, we also choose and hold our suppliers to high standards.

"Because we have full control over our products, we can ensure that our products are sustainable, that the components we’re using are recyclable and that the furniture will last," explains Founder David King.

Vertical integration also allows us to make changes and adapt to new innovations at speed. One of the newest designs in the collection, the 1977 Sofa, is packed using polypropylene non-woven fabric and compactly shipped, reducing waste throughout the supply chain. The modular designs across the entire collection enhances transport efficiency and reduced the carbon footprint.

Looking to the future

Sustainability at King Living goes beyond conversation. Ours is a commitment to advocacy for a circular economy.

Where possible, we source materials close to production facilities and we’re committed to minimising landfill waste by repurposing, reusing and donating products.

We’ll continue to reinvent, evaluate and adapt in every way we can, all in support of our vision of being a global leader in sustainable furniture design and manufacture.
